Big task lies ahead, says Marape

By JOE GURINA

PRIME Minister James Marape says the task before the government is large, whilst announcing his full cabinet recently.

Speaking at the Government House straight after the swearing in of the new Marape-Steven cabinet, he said, “the task before the government is large.

The challenges are great. But through hard work and consultation, we can take back PNG and build a strong nation for the future.”

He said with his band of cabinet (33 ministers) consisted with a mix of youth and experienced, “we will be tasked to address immediate priority of reforming the economy and enhancing social issues.’’

Under his leadership, he said he would seek better consultation with the focus on building a strong nation for the future.

“We will build and transform our great nation, build on the successes of the past, addressing the challenges of the future and brining increased wealth, prosperity and opportunity to all.

Marape said the government will focus on delivering results for the ordinary people through economic empowerment.

“We will invest in the economic sector so that we can grow our economy, enhance our manufacturing capacity, and bring downstream benefits for all. This means driving our economy forward, creating jobs and income generating opportunities and securing long-term sustainable growth for the future.’’

He said this was the objective of his government that he envies in 10 years’ time “we will be proclaimed the richest black nation on earth.’’

He promised to bring accountability back to the government with Ministers required to sign a performance agreement outlining key priorities and expectations.

He sounded a warning to the newly appointed Ministers to perform to the best of their ability adding there will be no consequences if a minster fails to deliver and meet expectations.

He said departmental heads will be held accountable under the leadership of Chief Secretary to the government hence with the endeavor to support their ministers.

In his address, he warned public servants to step up in their game and implement change.
“They must coordinate the vast reform agendas that is about to take place.”
